Professor John Howkins is a leading figure in the global development of creative economies. He is the author of the bestselling ‘The Creative Economy’ (2001) and ‘Creative Ecologies’ (2009). He is currently the visiting professor in City University of London.

John is the Founder and Director of the Adelphi Charter on Creativity, Innovation and Intellectual Property, and devised the London Intellectual Property Advisory Service (‘Own It’). John advises and runs seminars on the creative economy worldwide. Clients include UN, WIPO, WTO and the European Commission as well as corporations such as ABC, Google, HBO, Universal, BBC, Sky, Huace and Gehua.

John was associated with HBO Inc and Time Warner Inc from 1982 to 1996 with responsibilities for TV business development in UK and Europe. He was Chairman of BOP Consulting, Britain’s leading advisory company on culture, creativity and innovation, 2008-2011, and Chairman of Tornado Productions, Britain’s first streaming company, 2000-5. He is a board director of HotBed Media Ltd and a director of HandMade PLC 2000-10. He is a former Chairman of the London Film School and CREATEC, Deputy Chair of the British Screen Advisory Council (BSAC) and Executive Director of the International institute of Communications (IIC).

As a journalist he was Editor of Unit, InterMedia, Vision (the BAFTA journal) and the National Electronics Review; TV Editor and Books Editor, Time Out; and features contributor to The Economist, The Sunday Times, Harpers & Queen and many other publications.

Since 2006 John has visited China frequently and advises a wide range of corporate and government clients. The Shanghai city government set up the John Howkins Centre for the Creative Economy in 2006. Howkins & Associates is currently advising companies in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen. He is a founding investor in the Shanghai Creative Industries Investment Corporation which operates five creative clusters. He is a director of Howkins & Associates in London and Shanghai.

He has a BA in International Relations and a MA and AA (Dip) in Urban Design. He is a Visiting Professor at City University, London, and the Shanghai School of Creativity. In 2014 he was appointed Executive-in-Residence at the Drucker School of Management, Los Angeles. He is a member of BAFTA.
